The cooling days offer opportunities for music lovers, bargain-hunters, harvest-celebrators, and writers of all kinds at Taghum Hall. Two events celebrate the creative, and two are aimed at bringing the community together.
On Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. Taghum Hall presents An Evening of Acoustic Folk Music featuring sets by Jeremy Earley, Sapphire Guthrie, and Philip Seagram.
Earley is an accomplished singer-songwriter taking a break from touring with his band Naked by the Fire to focus on more introspective indie-folk. Guthrie, a long-time member of Alison Girvan’s renowned choirs, is a multi-instrumentalist whose songs span many contemporary genres. Seagram is a storyteller at heart with a keen interest in people, nature and life’s questions.
Write Off the Bat!, Sept. 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hall, is a bum-in-seat writing marathon, juried competition, and a chance to hang with fellow wordsmiths.
Writers are given a choice of two themes to address in the categories of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry series. Entries will be judged anonymously.
Winners will be revealed at an awards night in October. Registration is $60 and includes lunches, snacks, pep talks, and adjudication, with thanks to the Elephant Mountain Lit Fest (Sept. 11 to 17; details at emlfestival.com) for providing expertise and prizes.
Additionally, a community yard sale on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. aims to connect clearer-outers with bargain hunters. Tables are provided, and no registration is necessary, but 15 per cent of sales are requested towards the Hall’s kitchen rebuild project.
Taghum Hall’s annual Harvest Festival is early this year. On Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. folks can find farm stalls, fresh baking, artisan booths, live music, kids’ activities, wacky contests and a borsch lunch. It’s free, and it’s fun.
