Trail musician on national stage next week

Amber J will appear in the second season of CTV’s “The Launch” on Wed, Jan. 30

“If you haven’t heard of Trail, B.C., don’t worry a lot of people haven’t,” says Amber J. “I am so proud to represent where I come from, but also the places I’ve been along the way. Can’t wait to share the journey.”

Amber J is Amber Oosthuyzen, a 2011 graduate of JL Crowe who has been living in Toronto actively pursuing a career in music these past few years.

Next week, locals can hear what’s she’s been up to musically because the singer-songwriter will appear on the second season of “The Launch” when it airs on CTV Wednesday night.

“I’ve been a performer since I was pretty young,” she says on a “Launch” promo. “I think one of my earliest music memories is (when) I was in a little dance group and we danced and sang,” Amber laughs. “They actually turned my mic off because I was not very good.”

“The Launch” is a television series that handpicks undiscovered artists from across Canada who then vie for a chance to record an original song. Each hour-long episode features producers and guest mentors – on Wednesday it will be Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic – auditioning the five contestants performing the same pre-chosen song.

“I’ve worked really hard, I’ve never let someone tell me no,” Amber, 25, says on the video.

“I’ve always come back stronger and harder. I’m super passionate, I think you can hear it in my music and you can feel it when I perform. This is an amazing platform for me to see what I can become, who I can become.”

Growing up Amber was surrounded by music, but limited to the lyrics and sounds of gospel and Christian influences. Her evolving sound is described as a unique blend of pop and R&B, capturing her original perspective through organic storytelling.

Also performing on the premier episode of Season Two are Cassiøpeia of Burnaby, Dey of Toronto, NOA from Richmond Hill, ON, and Vi from Ottawa.
