High winds were the cause of two fires in Trail on the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 25.
Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire and Rescue were called to a fire in Sunningdale on Hillside Dr. and Sylvia Crescent, where a tree top had snapped off due to high winds and landed on a power line.
The fire crews then rushed to the fire on Highway 22 and brought that under control as well.
Ten firefighters from Trail Station 374 and four from Warfield Station 372 attended the Sunningdale fire at 2 p.m. and had it under control by 2:38 p.m.
"We were able get on that fire quick with a fast knock down," said KBRFR captain Grant Tyson.
Teck Fire, and Regional Fire and Rescue, Trail and Warfield stations attended the Highway 22 fire around 3 p.m.
"The second fire was just before the view point on Highway 22, same cause as Sunningdale fire; this fire was wind driven and was blowing to the North."
With current weather, residents are asked to be extra careful with campfires and mindful of other combustibles.
High winds have whipped up a fast-growing fire that started south of the Canada-U.S. border near Grand Forks and quickly moved northwest into the city.
Evacuation orders were put in place for several neighbourhoods as it poses a threat to human life.
