UPDATE: Castlegar cyclist injured in Thursday afternoon vehicle collision

Cyclist injured in collision

Emergency crews were called to the 1300 block of Columbia Avenue around 4:20 p.m. on Thursday, May 8 to a report of a collision between a vehicle and a bicycle.

The incident left the injured cyclist laying in the south-bound lane of Columbia Avenue near Kootenay Cannabis.

RCMP was the first to arrive on scene followed quickly by the Castlegar Fire Department who provided medical support to the cyclist and traffic control as the incident quickly snarled rush-hour traffic.

About 20 minutes later, BC Ambulance and KERPA (Kootenay Emergency Response Physicians Association) arrived on scene to care for the cyclist.

The 34-year-old cyclist was transported to hospital, but is expected to make a full recovery, according to a Castlegar RCMP statement.

The statement said it appears the involved vehicle was travelling south on Columbia Avenue and while attempting to make a right hand turn off of Columbia Avenue, traffic stopped, preventing the driver from completing the turn. This left the vehicle stopped and encroaching into the bike lane. The bicycle approached from behind and clipped the vehicle, resulting in the cyclist falling to the ground.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Castlegar RCMP at (250) 365-7721.
