Castlegar hosts mock-wildfire training exercise

Crews will be practicing in areas around Castlegar including Twin Rivers, Woodland Park and Grandview

Fire departments from across the region converged in Castlegar on April 6 for special wildfire training.

About 15 fire departments, 14 fire apparatus and 40 firefighters participated in a BC Wildfire Service Engine Boss Course for Structure Defence.

The mock exercise with hands-on training helps municipal firefighters learn the strategies and tactics used to support the BC Wildfire Service in defending homes during a wildfire.

Crews practiced in areas around Castlegar including the Twin Rivers, Woodland Park and Grandview neighbourhoods.

Assistant fire chief Nick Ahlefeld, who co-ordinated the event, said he heard good feedback from participants who said the course was well run and informative.

"The Castlegar Fire Department would like to thank all the neighbourhoods for their understanding and accommodating the fire fighters in this very important training in protecting our communities against wildfire," said Ahlefeld.
