The Castlegar News has won a Ma Murray journalism award from the BC and Yukon Community NewsMedia Association.

On Saturday, April 20 in Vancouver, the 102nd annual Ma Murray Awards took place honouring the 93 newspapers and magazines that make up the association.

Editor-reporter Betsy Kline took bronze in the Feature Article category for “‘I couldn’t get over it’: Castlegar mother heads to the front lines of Ukraine.” The piece delves into the story of April Huggett as she leaves Castlegar to help those on the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Kline previously won a bronze in 2022 for the Outdoor Recreation category for her piece “Robson man survives avalanche in Norns Range,” which details a harrowing account north of Castlegar.

She was also recognized with a national Canadian Community Newspaper Association award in 2019 for her reporting outlining shortcomings in ambulance services in B.C.’s Interior. “Critical Condition” took third place in the Best Feature Series category.
