Nick Ahlefeld has been appointed as Castlegar's acting fire chief.

Following the April 11 retirement of Castlegar's fire chief Sam Lattanzio, Nick Ahlefeld, one of the city's deputy chiefs, has been appointed acting fire chief.

Ahlefeld served as a paid-on-call volunteer with the Castlegar Fire Department for 10 years before being promoted to deputy fire chief in 2017.

“It’s an honour to take on this role and continue serving the community alongside an incredible team,” said Ahlefeld. “I look forward to building on the strong foundation already in place and continuing to provide high-quality fire protection and emergency services to Castlegar.”

The City of Castlegar says his appointment will ensure a smooth transition and support continuity within the department as the city reviews its current and future leadership needs.

“The safety and well-being of Castlegar residents is our top priority, and Nick’s experience in emergency response and fire services within our community will help ensure that the high level of service built by outgoing Fire Chief Sam Lattanzio is maintained,” says Mayor Maria McFaddin. “We thank Chief Lattanzio for his decades of service to the community and wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.”
