RDCK proposing curbside waste collection for Areas F, H and J

New services planned for about 3,400 properties

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has taken another step towards bringing curbside waste collection services to portions of Areas F, H and J including Ootischenia, Robson, some of the Slocan Valley and Nelson’s North Shore.

The RDCK says the new services will work towards its goal of reducing household waste and diverting recyclables and compostable materials from the landfill.

On Nov. 15, the RDCK board passed three readings of bylaws that would authorize the establishment of new curbside collection services in select areas. Those service establishment bylaws will now be submitted for approval to the Provincial Inspector of Municipalities.

If the bylaws are approved by the Inspector of Municipalities, the next step will be to initiate a referendum voting process to receive the required elector approval for the two bylaws.

The new service for Area J will build on the already established curbside recycling collection and include about 1,380 properties. Properties included in the regional district’s recycling program will be eligible for the new garbage and food waste collection streams.

A three-stream (garbage, recycling, and food waste) curbside collection service is planned for about 2,050 residences in portions of Areas F and H.

After consulting with other municipalities, regional districts, and solid waste consultants, the RDCK is estimating that the maximum cost per household annually will be $283.06 ($23.59/month) for Area J and $280.02 ($23.33/month) for Areas F and H.

Only those who have access to the service will be charged for the service.

To see if your property is within the defined portions for the service, maps can be found at RDCK.ca in the Nov. 15 board agenda package.
