Kootenay-Columbia School District 20 is asking parents of children that will enter kindergarten in the next five years to fill out a survey if they are interested in enroling their child in the Russian Language and Culture program at Twin Rivers Elementary School.
Enrolment in the program has been declining in recent years and the district is gauging interest before making a decision on the program's continuation.
The program did not run during the 2023/2024 school year due to lack of enrolment. But in the current school year, 54 children are enroled in the program throughout grades K-4.
The district held an information session on Dec. 2 to explain the program and is now following up with a survey available online at sd20.bc.ca. The survey closes Dec. 17.
The Russian program is open to all students in the district. It follows the B.C. curriculum in English, plus integrates daily Russian language exposure through routines, themes, and occasions.
SD20 says it is an opportunity for students to become familiar with reading and writing in Russian as well as speaking using common words and expressions.
