The polls have closed in Castlegar and surrounding rural areas, and all that’s left for candidates to do is await the electorate’s judgment.
Voters across the province cast their ballots today in municipal, regional district, and school board elections.
In the City of Castlegar Mayor Lawrence Chernoff is hoping voters return him to office for the fifth time, while two city councillors — Deb McIntosh and Bruno Tassone— want to replace him.
Eleven candidates are hoping to fill the six available council seats.
In rural Castlegar, voters were selecting between two candidates for Area J director. Incumbent Rick Smith was facing off against former director Gord Zaitsoff.
There were no school board elections in the area, as all candidates were acclaimed.
Election officials reported steady business at the polling station at the Castlegar Community Forum (the Council Chambers) in downtown Castlegar today.
With the polls closed, returning officials are counting the ballots. There are roughly 6,050 eligible voters in Castlegar, though in the last election turnout ran at about 39 per cent.
Results of the voting are expected between 9 and 10 p.m.
