UPDATED: 91-year-old man struck by transit bus in Castlegar dies

A 91-year-old man who was struck by a BC Transit bus last Tuesday has passed away.

A 91-year-old man who was struck by a BC Transit bus last Tuesday has succumbed to his injuries, according to Castlegar RCMP.

The RCMP received a call at 5:09 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9 and attended the scene at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 6th Street along with the Castlegar Fire Department and BC Ambulance.

“The investigation revealed a BC transit bus, carrying passengers, struck a pedestrian at the intersection,” reads the RCMP’s release.

No one on the bus was injured, but the man who was struck was transported to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail.

The following day, RCMP reported that the injured man was expected to make a full recovery, but on Tuesday RCMP revealed that the man had succumbed to his injuries on Friday, Jan. 12.

BC Transit’s president and CEO Manuel Achadinha released a statement on Wednesday, saying his “deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends” of the deceased.

“BC Transit takes safety very seriously and this incident will be investigated thoroughly,” read the statement. “The local RCMP, BC Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement, and other partners are investigating the incident, and BC Transit is fully cooperating. An internal investigation has also been initiated by BC Transit.”

The collision is still under investigation and anyone who witnessed the event, but who has still not spoken to police should contact the Castlegar RCMP at 250-365-7721.
