Area J’s animal control service could soon extend to Ootischenia and Fairview.

At its last meeting on Thursday, Sept. 21 the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s (RDCK) board asked staff to proceed with an alternative approval process (AAP) to expand the service.

“Basically we’re looking at, I believe it’s, 1,981 electors in Area J and that affected area, which is Robson, Raspberry, Ootischenia and Fairview,” explains Rick Smith, director for Area J.

Smith also explains that 199 petitioners would have to be opposed to the expansion of the animal control service for it to not be approved.

Anyone who does object can visit rdck.ca/EN/main/government/elections-other-voting/aap-referenda/portion-area-j-animal-control-aap.html and return a signed copy of the AAP elector response form before 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 6.

The change would mean additional taxes for Ootischenia and Fairview residents. The annual taxation limit for the service is capped at $22,000 or $0.0604/$1,000, which works out to $15.10 for a home valued at $250,000.

RDCK working with ministry on public consultation for ferry disassembly

At the same meeting, the board asked staff to work with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to set up a public consultation for the disassembly and disposal of the old Glade ferry.

“We passed a resolution to basically investigate how the consultation process between the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the community should work,” explains Andy Davidoff, director of Area I.
