Brent Kennedy Elementary students were forced to leave the school Wednesday by what School District 8 said was a ruptured gas line.

The school, located between Nelson and Castlegar, was closed at 12:30 p.m. and students were relocated to the gymnasium of nearby Mount Sentinel Secondary for the remainder of the day.

Chris Kerr, SD8’s director of operations, said in an email that a gas line was accidentally punctured during work on the school’s septic system.

FortisBC has inspected the school and found no gas present. The line is expected to be repaired within the day and students will be welcomed back to Brent Kennedy on Friday.
