Fast work by the Castlegar Fire Department and a Good Samaritan quickly put out a brush fire near the access road that leads from behind the Dairy Queen to Highway 3.

Fire Chief Sam Lattanzio says the fire was human caused and the RCMP is investigating.

Multiple calls came in just before 5 p.m. Wednesday, reporting the fire.

“I would like to thank the Good Samaritan that called 911 and actioned the fire with his portable extinguisher,” said Lattanzio.

Two engines and other support vehicles as well as about 10 crew members attended the blaze.

Fire Chief Sam Lattanzio wants to remind the public of the importance of not discarding cigarettes on the ground, even if you think they are fully extinguished.
