UPDATE: Castlegar RCMP investigating ‘suspicious’ fire at Millennium Park

The fire started around 11:30 a.m. Sunday

Castlegar RCMP are investigating a fire deemed suspicious at Millennium Park on Sunday, June 4.

Police are looking for a man who was seen leaving the vicinity of the park on a dark-coloured bicycle, who is described as a Caucasian male, aged approximately 20-30 years of age, with a pock-marked face, thin build and wearing dark clothing.

The fire, which was started at the base of a tree, burned approximately 30 metres by 30 metres before it was quickly extinguished by the Castlegar Fire Department, who were called to the scene at approximately 11:30 a.m.

According to Chief Sam Lattanzio, the cause of the fire was unrelated to a fireworks display as part of Sunfest celebrations.

The department was able to utilize its newest piece of equipment – a UTV donated by Castlegar Rotary to fight the fire. The UTV made it’s debut at Saturday’s Sunfest parade. CFD also used three fire apparatus and three command units as well as 14 firefighters.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and police would like to speak to the man, as well as anyone who may have seen or have video of anything suspicious around the time of the fire.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Castlegar RCMP at (250) 365-7721.
