Building permit values were up significantly in the City of Castlegar in 2018 with most of the increase coming from single-family dwellings.

The city issued 191 permits valued at $13.1 million last year. That is up from $9.6 million in 2017.

Even though the bottom line shows an increase of about $3.5 million, the total number of permits was actually down by 29 from 2017.

The city granted permits for 22 new single-family homes with a value of $6.23 million in 2018, up by more than $3.5 million from the previous year.

Alterations of family homes were also on the rise with 139 permits issued valued at $5.8 million, up by $3.9 million from 2017.

Commercial permits were down to $843,600 compared to $2.9 million in 2017.

Building permit values have gone up and down in recent years, sometimes reflecting large commercial projects such as the FortisBC Operations Centre project in 2016.

Five years of building permit values:

2014 — $6.1 million

2015 — $12.2 million

2016 — $23.3 million

2017 — $9.6 million

2018 — $13.1 million
