Castlegar precipitation 43 per cent below normal in February

Rainfall was 80 per cent below normal, but snow was average

Total precipitation levels in the West Kootenay were 43 per cent below average in February.

Total snowfall (25 cm) was close to average at the West Kootenay Regional Airport weather station, with most of the snow falling during the last three days of the month. But total rainfall was 80 per cent below average.

Southeast Fire Centre weather forecaster Jesse Ellis says cooler temperatures kept snow levels at valley bottom elevations for most of the month as is common during a La Nina pattern.

The average monthly temperature was 1.5 degrees below normal. The warmest day of the month was Feb. 16 at 8.9 C. The coldest day was Feb. 23 at -15.3 C.
