Castlegar’s free outdoor ice rinks open for winter fun

The community ice rinks located at Kinnaird Park in Castlegar are now open.

The outdoor community ice rinks located at Kinnaird Park are now open and many residents have been taking advantage of this free activity during the holidays.

The rinks are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m every day dependent on the weather. They will remain open until late January or early February, as long as the temperatures stay at freezing or below. The ice can be found at the back side of the park, at the ball fields off of 14 Ave. and 26 St.

The rinks are lit up during the evening providing a great place to sneak in some after-work exercise after the recent weeks of eating too many holiday goodies.

Two rinks are available, one for skating that is 50 feet wide by 90 feet long and a second one for hockey that is 65 feet wide by 95 feet long.

If you want to make your skating outing into more of an event, there are even burning barrels available for use. You need to bring your own wood, and make sure you have supplies to put out your fire.

According to the City’s website, “Maintenance of the rinks is carried out by the City of Castlegar public works crew, who take pride in making a smooth and safe ice surface for everyone’s enjoyment.”
