The City of Castlegar has announced that the city is looking into the possibility of constructing a joint Visitors Information Centre, Art Gallery and Chamber of Commerce office suite in one building.

Right now the project is just in the exploratory stage, and all parties would eventually have to agree to the plan before it could move forward.

The city will be paying Fairbank Architects $17,800 to meet with the parties to determine space requirements, look for joint space opportunities and develop a conceptual plan.

Mayor Lawrence Chernoff stated, “The Visitor Information Centre is the city’s face to all tourists and visitors and it needs to reflect our growing modern community. Because the city is continuing to grow, we need to provide new facilities to accommodate the growth.

“With both the Chamber of Commerce and the Art Gallery looking for new space, it makes economic sense to house them in the same building to achieve economies of scale,” added Chernoff.

According to a city press release, “The architects will develop a concept plan and provide cost figures to determine whether the building will be financially feasible.”

If the project proceeds, in addition to the above parties, the building will also house the Castlegar and District’s new economic development liaison.”
