City of Castlegar hires new CAO

The City of Castlegar announced Thursday that a new chief administrative officer (CAO) has been hired to replace retiring CAO John Malcolm.

Chris Barlow, current director of transportation and civic works for the city has been chosen for the position.

According to a City of Castlegar press release, Barlow has “17 years of local government experience with eight years at a senior manager level and two years of acting as deputy chief administrator experience. He has successfully graduated from the Local Government Management Certificate program.”

The city stated that the choice was made after an in-depth executive search for the position.

Mayor Chernoff stated, “The city engaged independent career managers to conduct an extensive job search which included candidates from Alberta and British Columbia. There were two full rounds of interviews with Mr. Barlow being the successful candidate.”

“I am honoured to have the opportunity and look forward to working closely with mayor and council to achieve their goals and objectives,” said Barlow. “I am very excited to continue to serve the citizens of Castlegar and lead the team of dedicated and hardworking staff we have to continue the success of the city.”

Barlow will begin working in the position on Sept. 5 during a transition time with current CAO John Malcolm followed by assuming full responsibilities on Oct. 1.
