The City of Castlegar and CP Rail have removed seven homeless camps along the railroad’s right of way.
Castlegar’s corporate manager Tracey Butler told city council at their Aug. 18 meeting that only one of those camps was occupied. The rest were abandoned with a lot of junk left behind.
Butler said the city partnered with Castlegar and District Community Services Society (CDCSS) to ensure that people knew what was going on and were respected.
Butler said the operation went very smoothly and that CPR and CDCSS were great to work with during the process.
CPR is paying the bill for the cleanup.
A contractor completed the work earlier this month.
Butler noted that in addition to the encampments, the contractor cleaned up additional garbage along the tracks and ensured all of the shopping carts that were found were returned to the proper businesses.
