At a special meeting held on July 26, Castlegar City Council agreed to send a letter to the Ministry of Transportation supporting intersection improvements to Minto Road and Highway 22, by the Brick on the south side of town.
"That area has been a high impact area for accidents," said councillor Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff. "In the last five years, I think they quoted 22 accidents occurring. Anything that can be done there to alleviate accidents and deaths, is, obviously, a good thing."
Castlegar mayor Lawrence Chernoff echoed Heaton-Sherstobitoff's concerns about the area.
"It's been awful," he said. "There's been numerous accidents over there. What happens at a protect T intersection is there is so much more protection for motorists. There'll be some changes there and people need to realize that. Highways (Ministry of Transportation) have studied this and come up with a formula that they think will work really well on Highway 22."
The project is expected to cost $1.6 million and begin within a couple of weeks.
"They want to get it tendered and moved relatively quickly," said Chernoff. "I think by the fall it should be all done."
