A solemn ceremony was conducted at Castlegar City Hall on Monday, November 18.
It was the raising of the Métis flag, the embracing of Métis culture, and the commemoration of the hanging of Métis leader Louis Riel on November 16, 1885 following a Prairie rebellion that bears his name.
Three such events were held in the area this year – in Trail, Nelson and Castlegar, with ceremonies carried out on Friday, Saturday, and Monday, respectively. Chief Rempel said the flag raising events were staged in this manner for the sake of those who wished to take in each of them.
