The Regional District of Central Kootenay declared a state of emergency and issued an evacuation order in Kaslo on Monday evening following a landslide above Zwicky Road.

The slide occurred at about 6 p.m., too close to dark for a geotechnical crew to examine the slide and assess the risk, according to RDCK spokesperson Bronwen Bird. She said the evacuation was carried out as a precautionary measure. No buildings were damaged and no one was injured.

Evacuated residents reported to the reception centre at the Kaslo Royal Canadian Legion Hall, and temporary accommodation was organized from there.

As of Wednesday, the evacuation order remained in place for just six homes below the landslide. The properties surrounding the evacuation order still remain on evacuation alert and the RDCK advises that residents should stay vigilant and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.

The evacuation order and alert will remain in place for at least the next week while geotechnical engineers continue to conduct further monitoring and assessment of the slide.
