A 37-year-old father and his 15-year-old son, reported missing to Nelson RCMP Feb. 24, are safe after spending a cold night sheltered in a tree well on the back of Ymir Peak.

RCMP Sgt. Darryl Little, said 13 search and rescue members were looking for the pair for approximately 30 minutes before the duo skied out on their own.

The pair was not equipped to spend the night in the elements and lacked proper avalanche  equipment.

Little said they were examined at the lodge by a doctor who is also a member of the search and rescue team. Other than being a little cold and hungry, they required no medical treatment.

With snow continuing to fall, back-country enthusiasts are reminded to check conditions, leave an itinerary with someone and have the proper equipment and training before venturing out.
