The use of fireworks and sky lanterns will be banned within the City of Castlegar and in the Regional District of Central Kootenay effective at noon on Friday, July 15.

The move is in conjunction with the Southeast Fire Centre prohibiting Category 2 fires.

Only campfires are currently permitted within the city burning clean campfire wood on private property or in designated fire pits at Millennium and Kinnaird parks. Burning of yard waste or trash is never permitted within the city.

A Category 2 fire is classified as one to two concurrently burning piles no larger that two metres high by three metres wide or burning stubble or grass over an area less than 0.2 hectares.

Other prohibitions under the ban include exploding binary targets, air curtain burners and burn barrels.

Category 3 open burning was banned at the end of June.
