The City of Castlegar has engaged specialty consultants to solve a fishy problem — removing fish from the Millennium Park Swimming Ponds.
City operations manager Samuel Shine reported at council’s May 16 committee of the whole meeting that a research survey last September showed that some fish had taken up residence in the ponds.
Shine said that before maintenance can be done on the ponds to prepare them for opening, the fish need to be removed.
The city is awaiting the necessary permits before starting the work, but once they are in place the consultants will relocate the fish.
Shine said that the relocation is accomplished by gently electrifying the water.
“It’s just enough to stun the fish,” explained Shine.
The fish then float to the surface where they are scooped out and relocated.
