According to reports, several small brush fires in the Genelle area have been contained.

According to reports, several small brush fires in the Genelle area have been contained. The fires were apparently caused by sparks from trains passing through.

"From what we've heard, the fires were started by brakes on one of the trains coming back from Trail," said councillor Kevin Chernoff. "They had all three fire departments respond: Trail, Castlegar, and Genelle. They were all out after a couple of hours after they were reported."

The brush fires occurred on July 5 after a day of hot weather in the West Kootenay.

"I was really surprised at how dry it was," he said. "Considering all the rain we've got. It was only some 48 hours before that, that we had those torrential downpours. Now we're talking grass fires already."
