Lighting started two fires today northeast of Nelson between Sitkum and Kokanee Creeks.

The first is an estimated 3.2 kilometres north of Kootenay Lake and, as of about 5:30 today, covers about 0.09 hectares. It is on the ridge between Sitkum and Kokanee Creeks.

The second is about 9 kilometres north of the lake, also between Sitkum and Kokanee Creeks but closer to Kokanee, and smaller, an estimated 0.009 hectares.

The are both being worked by air tankers this afternoon and evening, according to Karlie Shaughnessy of the Southwest Fire Centre.

She reports that neither fire is threatening any structures at this time.
