November brought twice the usual snowfall to Castlegar area

November’s colder-than-normal temperatures resulted in double the usual amount of snowfall in the Castlegar area during the month.

The mean monthly temperature was 3.2 degrees lower than normal, the coolest mean monthly temperature in over twenty years.

Total snowfall for the month was 73 cm, almost twice the average amount of 37.5 cm. The snowiest day was Nov. 29 when 25.8 cm fell at the weather station at the Southeast Fire Centre at the West Kootenay Regional Airport. The following day saw an additional 11.6 cm of snow.

Despite the extra snow, total precipitation was 27 per cent below normal as the total rainfall for the month was only one-quarter of the average amount.

No temperature or precipitation records were broken during the month.

The warmest day was Nov. 2 at 7.6 C and the coldest day was Nov. 30 at -10.5 C.
