UPDATED: Family confirms Larstone’s body found

Ty Larstone, 32, went missing Jan. 26

The body of a Winlaw man whose disappearance led to a nearly week-long search has been found.

Ty Larstone, who lived in the Lebahdo area just south of Winlaw, was last seen alive Jan. 26 on Bailey Road west of Slocan River near Appledale.

His stepfather Paddy Roberts told the Star that Larstone’s body was found by friends Friday afternoon. New Denver RCMP, who did not identify Larstone, said in a statement that the cause of death was not considered suspicious and is under investigation by the coroners service.

Roberts and his wife Kathy Larstone thanked the community for the extensive search in a statement to the Star.

“Katie and I are forever grateful to those who assisted in finding Ty and bringing him back to us,” said Roberts. “Castlegar Search and Rescue and Nelson Search and Rescue were amazing in their dedication and in their skills in locating the area where he was. The entire detachment of the New Denver RCMP treated us with the utmost humanity and kindness while doing the difficult job they had to do. We will never forget those four wonderful officers.

“We came back to the valley after 10 years gone, and are deeply touched by the concern and love of those who were our neighbours there for well over a decade.”

Larstone, 32, was wearing camouflage clothing and had a backpack with two firearms when he was last seen. Roberts described Larstone as an experienced outdoorsman who enjoyed camping in Valhalla Provincial Park.

“I’d known him and been in his life since he was 11 years old. He was a very fine young man,” said Roberts. “He was an outstanding person in the woods.”

Roberts said a celebration of life is planned in Winlaw for Feb. 23.
