A vote recount has confirmed that Maria McFaddin defeated Lawrence Chernoff in the race to become Castlegar’s mayor by just five votes.

Following the release of the preliminary election results on election day (Oct. 15) the City of Castlegar says it received a request from a candidate to complete a recount of ballots.

Election officials completed that recount on Monday, Oct. 17, and reconfirmed that McFaddin has received 920 votes and Chernoff had received 915.

The official election results will be declared by the city’s chief elections officer by 4 p.m. on Oct. 19.
