A winter storm is heading towards the West Kootenay and a large amount of snow is expected to fall at higher elevations.

Environment Canada is warning that up to 15 centimetres of snow could fall Monday night on Highway 3 from the Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass, with an additional 20 centimetres expected Tuesday.

Travellers are advised to postpone non-essential travel.

The snow level is expected to sit at 1,100 metres during the day and 800 metres during the night, so rain is forecast for valley bottoms.
