Workers at the Heritage Credit Union/HG Insurance could be on strike as of Tuesday.

Seventy-two hours strike notice has been issued today by workers at Heritage Credit Union and HG Insurance in Castlegar and Slocan Park.

A press release states that all possible avenues to avert a work stoppage had been exhausted. Workers expect to be in a legal strike position this coming Tuesday.

Changes made in 2010 to the pension plan are a key point in the unionized workers' displeasure.

“We’re approaching the crossroad with an employer that refuses to meet our members’ needs concerning the huge cut in pension benefits implemented in 2010,” said Jeff Bromley, Financial Secretary of USW Local 1-405 which bargains for the 35 members at Heritage Credit Union and HG Insurance in Castlegar and Slocan Park.

“This isn’t the direction we wanted to go but the employer leaves us little choice,” continued Bromley. The workers at both Heritage Credit Union and HG Insurance have been without a contract since May 31.

The union spokesperson expressed regret felt by the membership over the likely impact a strike would have on Credit Union customers.

Contact had been made and a message left with Heritage CU/HG Insurance management soliciting comment on the situation. Such comment will be posted on this website as and when obtained.
