There was a suspected gas leak at the Kootenay Market in Castlegar early Monday afternoon.

The Castlegar Fire Department received a report of a smell of gas or gas leak in the building and responded to the scene, where they made sure that the entire strip mall was evacuated before proceeding inside.

“We entered to see if we could determine what the cause of the issue was,” said Sam Lattanzio, fire chief. “Fortunately, we didn’t find anything abnormal. We then waited for Fortis to arrive on the scene and … they went in and confirmed that everything seems to be OK.”

Fortis confirmed that they received an odour call at about 11:30 a.m.

After making sure that the site was safe, the Fortis technician checked for natural gas readings and leaks, but none were found.

Fortis says he cleared the site at about 12:30 p.m.
