Vandals damage Columbia River gazebo near Castlegar

Columbia Power Corporation is repairing the damage

Repair plans are underway for a gazebo on the Columbia River near the Hugh Keeleyside Dam after vandals damaged the facility last month.

CPC spokesperson Audrey Repin says that once the organization was made aware of the damage, repairs were made to panels that had been removed.

“We will reassess the more detailed repair requirements in the fall but, in the meantime, we feel the gazebo could still be accessed safely,” said Repin.

The gazebo is on the Robson side of the river and is a favourite with local fishermen. It was built by the Columbia Power Corportation (CPC). Consultation with the community prior to the construction of the Arrow Lakes Generating Station noted that in the vicinity of where the tailrace of the generating station was to be constructed, was a popular, traditional community fishing area called Portuguese Point.

Columbia Power committed to improve the surrounding area so that it could continue to be enjoyed by anglers. The gazebo was built to provide shelter in inclement weather and with the construction of the staircase and railings provided easier access for seniors and families.
