The Nelson Police Department believes the death of a woman in Nelson on June 4 was the result of a drug overdose.

According to a police news release, they found a non-responsive woman in the back yard of a building in the 800 block of Vernon Street. Attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

Police are still determining what drugs were involved and the file has been turned over to the BC Coroners Service.

“The Nelson Police Department has noted a marked increase in overdose-related calls for service recently,” the news release states, “and believes much of the local drug supply may be contaminated with other dangerous substances not known by the user.”

The department advises people not to use alone, to carry naloxone, and to get drugs tested if possible.
