Construction is underway at the highway improvement between Castlegar and Trail near Trowelex.

The Ministry of Transportation has begun work on a project to install a protected tee interection at the corner of Highway 22 and Minto Road by Trowelex and the Brick.

The project is being under taken by Copcan Contracting and began on Oct. 9 at a cost of approximately $1.9 million.

"The project is targeted to be completed this fall," said project manager Rob Kalabis. "No major delays are expected, however, there will be some minor delays during construction."

Castlegar city councillor and owner of Trowelex Kevin Chernoff says the improvements are desperately needed.

"They're calling it the Minto Road safety upgrade," he said. "What they're doing in installing some dedicated left hand turn lanes to give that added measure of safety. We've had an increasing number of accidents at the intersection at Minto Road and Columbia Avenue (Highway 22)."
