In loving memory ~

Alden (Al) passed away peacefully, at age 94, on Jan 6, 2025 at Pleasant Valley Manor in Armstrong.

He was born in Bright Sand Lake, SK to parents Floyd Bigsby and Edna (nee Bezdek). At the age of nine the family moved to Armstrong, BC where he spent his youth working on the farm and attending school. After high school Alden attended BC Provincial Normal School in Victoria where he attained his teacher's certification.

Alden took a teaching position in Ashcroft where he set up the first IE shop for the school. Next he taught at the Langley high school for a year before moving to Castlegar in 1957 where he taught Industrial Education at Stanley Humphries High School until he retired in 1985. He enjoyed teaching and received praise from many of his students who said he inspired them in their careers through his encouraging manner.

In his retirement Alden built two woodwork shops where he created many beautiful bowls, cutting boards and tea-boxes for family and friends. He often repaired items for neighbours in his shop. Alden was an active volunteer in the Castlegar Fire Department. In his mid-life he helped build an amphibious airplane which he flew for many years. He also helped build and operate a small sawmill in Salmo. He and Kaye enjoyed trips to Costa Rica, Barbados and Cuba. He also enjoyed a weekly poker night with friends for years. He served as a director on the seniors housing Co-Op at Grandview Heights. In 2018, Alden moved back to Armstrong to be closer to family while living at Heaton Place, and then onto Pleasant Valley Manor.

Alden was predeceased by his parents, brother Floyd, sister Jean, first wife Betty (nee Sarell) and second wife Kaye (nee Green). He is survived by his brother Bob (Joan), sister Sue, children Penny (Dennis), Doug (Lorayne) and Tom (Shelagh), seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

A family gathering will be held in Armstrong. In lieu of flowers a donation to a charity of your choice is appreciated.

The family extends its thanks to the staff at Pleasant Valley Manor for their caring attention in his last few years.
