Alex Joseph Cheveldave was born on January 16, 1946 in Nelson, BC to Doris and Joe Cheveldave. He had two older brothers Joe Jr and Cecil and a younger sister Elaine. Unfortunately, Alex and his siblings experienced sorrow at an early age when their mom passed in 1963. Alex’s dad Joe brought a new bride to his home when he married Dianne Konkin and Alex welcomed step sisters Dianne Junior (now Postnikoff) and Elaine Junior (now Evin) to the family. After graduation, Alex entered into the Instrumentation and Process Control Program at BCIT. Upon his return, he married Janet Veregin from Grand Forks in 1966. Also in 1966 Alex landed his first and only job in his field of Instrumentation at the Columbia Cellulose Company now known as Zellstoff Celgar. Alex and Janet raised three children. Liana is the eldest and was born in 1967; Michael, their only son was born in 1969; and Larissa, their youngest daughter was born in 1973. Sadly, Alex’s step mother Dianne passed away in 1969. Alex had built their family home in Ootischenia in 1971 which remained the family home ever since. Unfortunately in this same year, Alex lost his brother Cecil in a workplace accident. Despite these losses Alex enjoyed life to its fullest. Alex’s love of life included an appreciation of the great outdoors. Alex enjoyed picking suziki, a variety of mushrooms and huckleberries. He also spent a lot of time camping and boating with family and friends, creek fishing, golfing, and curling. He served with the Ootischenia Improvement District for 19 years and was also a life-long member of the USCC where he volunteered considerable time supporting many community activities and functions. Alex loved being a grandfather to four grandchildren – granddaughters Annika, Jessica and grandsons Evan and Lucas. He loved singing and continued to express his passion for Doukhobor acapella singing by singing with the Kootenay Men’s Choir and directing and singing in the Doukhobor Men’s Tri-Choir. Alex quietly passed away at the Trail Hospital on December 1, 2010. He lived a full, active and joyful life for over 64 years but now leaves behind his wife Janet; daughter Liana, her husband Jim Zwick and their daughter Jessica; his son Michael and his wife Venie and their children Annika and Evan; and his daughter Larissa and her husband Bob Fortin and their son Lucas. He also leaves behind his step mother Florence Poohachoff; his brother and sister-in-law Joe & Olga Cheveldave and their family; as well as his sister and brother-in-law Elaine and Myron Bevans and their family; his father-in-law Peter Veregin and his sister-in-law Naida Rezansoff and her daughter Stasia; and his brother-in-law Peter Veregin; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Larry and Maureen Veregin and their family. Alex is now happy to be reuniting with those who have passed before him which include his mom and dad Joe and Doris Cheveldave; his step mother Dianne Cheveldave; his brother Cecil Cheveldave; his sister-in-law Nancy Cheveldave and his niece Gail Cheveldave; his mother-in-law Mabel Veregin; his brother-in-law Tim Rezansoff; and other family members and friends. And a big thank-you to all extended family and friends for their support during this difficult time.
