In loving memory ~
With heavy hearts, we sadly announce the passing of Alex (Ted) Chernoff from kidney failure, on April 13, 2022, at the KBRH in Trail, B.C.
Ted was born in Grand Forks in 1943 to Bill and Polly Chernoff, the youngest of four children. He is survived by his wife Mona, his sons Dean ( DeeDee) and Doug (Allison), grandchildren Curtis (Chelsea), Katelyn (Brandon) and Caroline. He leaves behind his sister Pauline Fofonoff, brother John and numerous nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his parents and his oldest brother Bill.
Ted started his working life working for his brothers at the Chernoff Brother's Sawmill in Nakusp. After some years he went to Fernie to work for the B.C. Forest Service, where he met Mona, the love of his life. After they married in 1966 they lived in Nakusp and Fernie, eventually settling in Blueberry Creek in 1973, where they have lived ever since. Ted worked as a driver for Skyway Distributors and then Labatt's, until his retirement in 2002.
Ted was very devoted to his family, they were number one in his life, and that never wavered. He served Mona her morning coffee in bed for most of his life, until later years when he decided he needed a little extra sleep. He enjoyed many years of camping in the trailer, alongside other family and friends, and usually was the first one up every morning to light the fire and put the coffee on. He also loved picking huckleberries for Mona's pies and loved spending time outside. Ted loved to go for rides, be it a day trip or longer. He especially enjoyed his last trip to pick up Doug's tractor. Said the trip was fantastic but the road was "the pits".
Ted was a volunteer firefighter for Blueberry Creek and helped to build the firehall, This was followed by volunteer service for Castlegar Search and Rescue. He was active in the Brilliant Men's Group and really enjoyed his time with the men every Wednesday morning.
In later years he took up woodworking and enjoyed making gifts of salad tongs and coffee cup holders, amongst other things. Mona was often at his side in the woodworking shop, managing the important task of making sure Ted had his safety glasses on. He loved to wash cars, ensuring Mona always had the cleanest car on the block. In the colder months he could be found in his basement in front of the wood stove, where he spent many hours trying to keep warm.
At Ted's request, his family will host a gathering of family and friends on a warm day (date to be determined) to toast him over a glass of whiskey, tell stories and share some laughs. He leaves behind a big hole in our hearts.
His family would like to thank the staff, Nurses and Doctors on the 3rd floor and the dialysis department in KBRH for taking care of him.
