In loving memory ~

With very heavy hearts we share with you that Brenda Balahura passed away on January 16/2025 after a tenacious battle with cancer.

Brenda's warmth and kindness touched so many throughout the Castlegar community. Alongside her husband Mike, Brenda was honoured as Castlegar's Citizen of the Year and was named District Rotarian of the Year in 2024 for her incredible service and commitment to others. She was deeply involved in the Legion, Rotary Club, Eastern Star, and many other organizations. As a dedicated teacher-librarian at Castlegar Primary, Twin Rivers Elementary and Robson Elementary, Brenda shared her love for books and learning with countless individuals in the community.

Brenda spent her early years growing up in Northern England, before moving with her family to Nelson as a young girl . She met Mike, the love of her life and best friend, when she was in high school. Brenda is survived by Mike, brother Ian, children Marissa (Jeremy) and Justin (Lindsay), and granddaughter Cadence.

Brenda was a fearless traveller and lived for adventure! After retiring from SD 20 Mike and Brenda explored the world. Whether she was getting lost in a good book, planning her next getaway, or pulling an old record off the shelf from her huge rock and roll collection, she embraced everything she loved with passion. She had a special gift for hosting—whether it was the lively gatherings of the Rotary Club, a huge family feast that always felt like home, a big dinner for the fly fishing club, or making staff parties unforgettable, she knew how to make every occasion memorable and full of joy.

A celebration of life will be held at the Brilliant Cultural Centre on March 29th at 1:00pm. Please join us in remembering and celebrating this very special lady.
