Mrs. Catherine (Kay) Kumorek passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of August 4, 2019.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Kathy) Hawthorne of Gainesville, Georgia, son, Dan Szkica of Castlegar, BC, granddaughters, Michelle Szkica, Trail, BC, Kerry Szkica,
Castlegar, BC, great-granddaughter, Alyssa Berdusco, Trail, BC and many nieces and nephews in BC and Alberta. She was predeceased by husbands Nick Szkica (1958) and Michael Kumorek (1982) Catherine was one of seven children born on September 17th,1916 to Mary and John Kunesky in Hillcrest, Alberta, all of whom have predeceased
her. She attended school in Hillcrest and played basketball and other sports in school.
She left Hillcrest and moved to Nelson, BC where she married Nick Szkica, and had her family. She was a very devoted and loving mother. In 1958 her husband passed away and she went to work at Mount St. Frances. She was a Pythian Sister, Member of Ukrainian Catholic Womans, and an avid bowler.
In 1964 she met and married Michael Kumorek and moved to Trail. There she enjoyed her circle of friends and was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Warfield. She continued to play sports. Curling and badminton were her passion and she enjoyed her 3 - 5 mile walks each evening with her neighbour. She and Michael enjoyed many road trips throughout BC and traveled the deep south and western US. They also went on a cruise to Alaska.
Kay lived in Warfield for 54 years, until moving to Castle Wood Village in Castlegar, BC. Kay will be missed by her friends and family.
The family of Catherine Kumorek wish to express their special thanks to the Management and Staff of Castle Wood Village and Talarico Place, who took excellent care of their mother.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 17th, 2019, 2 pm - 4 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, 2141 Columbia Ave., Trail, BC. Brent Long of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services has been entrusted with arrangements.
