Charles Nickerson

Charles Nickerson October 2 1922-Feb 1 2010. A loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandpa, great grandpa and soldier lost his battle with heart disease at the age of 87. Charles Ronald Nickerson (Ron) passed away on February 1,2010 with his family by his side at the Elk Valley Hospital in Fernie,BC.

Ron was born on October 2, 1922 in Port Clyde, NS. He served overseas in WWI with the 1st Canadian Survey Regiment RCA. After the war he met Phyllis and they were married on August 30 1947.

In 1948 with their firstborn Charles they left the Maritimes for Robson, BC where Ron helped his father in his painting business. In April of 1949 Ron’s career with (known as then) the Department the Castlegar-Robson Ferry, and when the ferry was no longer needed he became Bridge Foremen and was in charge of painting the many bridges throughout the East and West Kootenays. Ill health forced his early retirement.

In 1990 Ron and Phyllis decided to move to Sparwood, BC where Ron enjoyed his 2 sons, grandson and nephews on many hunting and fishing expeditions. Ron and Phyllis enjoyed friends and family camping at Rock Lake and Driftwood Bay

Ron was a member of the Sparwood Legion and looked forward to reading the Legion magazine.

Ron is survived by his loving wife Phyllis, his sons Charlie(Lodie), Robert(Darlene) of Sparwood, daughters Pam Percival of Sparwood, Pat(Joe) Butala of Golden,BC, Helen(Rick)Bush, Kerri(Ken)Neufeld, Trudy(Dave) Corney all of Okotoks,AB and Sherry(Steve)Farnum of Trail, BC 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and Buddy, his canine friend. He is also survived by his sister Thelda Rindler of Rossland, BC and numerous nieces and nephews in BC and the Maritimes. He was predeceased by his parents Edward and Ethel, son-in-law Dennis Percival and brother-in-law Con Rindler.

There will be no service by Ron’s request. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, Okanagan & Kootenay Area office, 4-1551 Sutherland Ave, Kelowna, BC V1Y 9M9. Arrangement entrusted to Cherished Memories Funeral Services Ltd.

The family would like to thank Drs Soetaert& Bernard, the caring staff of the Elk Valley Hospital, and wonderful friends and neighbors for their undying love& support.
