In loving memory ~
It is with sadness the Giraud family announces the passing of Byng Giraud. Byng was born in Trail and grew up on the family orchard in Robson. Lasting friends, who were adventurous always up to something, made his early years memorable. He attended Robson Elementary School, then Brilliant School, and graduated from Stanley Humphries High School.
Byng was always busy, never wasting his free time. He began his work-life delivering The Trail Daily Times before moving onto weekend work cleaning sawdust at Waldie's mill, then pulling chains on the Robson ferry. He was one of the crew responsible for the installation on sewer lines in north Castlegar. He then headed to Pine Point NWT on another sewer line installation.
He started his electrical apprenticeship during construction of the Keenlyside Dam. His trade took him all over BC including the Peace River area, Prince Rupert, Kamloops, the East and West Kootenays, and Golden. Byng was well thought of by his bosses and coworkers and was elevated to foreman on many construction projects. As a skilled electrician he also spent some time teaching college per-apprenticeship courses. He retired from Celgar in 2003 and moved to the Black Forest area of Germany.
Byng was a collector. He had various collections including coins, stamps and several old cars he liked to tinker with. More recently, his time was spent researching genealogy and working on Robson history collaborating with Bruce Rohn, Ann Croft Sutherland, and others.
His list of Robson and district community projects included the Robson Community Memorial Church, Robson Raspberry Improvement District, Castlegar and District Historical Society, and Parks and Trails. He also enjoyed visiting many Robson pioneers collecting their stories and photographs. Byng was always willing to lend a hand.
Shortly after moving to Germany He married Heidi. Continuing with his community service, He represented Canada as a member of the Canadian Legion. at many Remembrance Day parades and services in Europe. He and Heidi, travelled extensively throughout Europe, Egypt, Turkey, and the Azores.
Left to remember him are his wife, Heidi; her children Daniel, Andreas, and Patrick Fallert and families, and his children: Tammy, Byng, and Amanda; stepdaughters : Kelly and Carla; siblings, Geraldine, Kathy, Victor, Winifred and their spouses; four grandchildren: Brandon, Jessica, Atticus, and Delenn; great grandchildren: Destiny and Wilder; great-great grandchild: Thedore.
Our hearts are filled with gratitude for knowing him, the great memories we shared with him, and a feeling of peace. He passed away quietly tidying up his yard, doing what he loved to do.
A service will be held in Germany on April 4th and a memorial in Robson later.
In lieu of donations, please do something to make your community better, such as Byng would have done.
