August 16, 1939 - June 8, 2018
Our much loved mother, Helmi Stroes, departed our lives on June 8, 2018 in Castlegar, BC, peacefully at her home as per her wishes.
Helmi was born on August 16, 1939, in Groningen, Holland. While in university she met her Fred, her best friend and beloved husband of 56 years, and they immigrated to Canada in 1961. After a few adventures, they eventually landed in Castlegar, BC, which is where they made home with their 5 children. Helmi had a curiosity and determination to pick up new skills and hobbies that was inspirational to those around her, especially her passion for food and cooking.
After spending many years as a stay at home mom and homemaker, Helmi entered the workplace in the restaurant industry which evolved into a career as owner/manager at the Castlegar Airport Pie in the Sky restaurant. Mom was well known for her specialty dishes, and her quick wit was enjoyed by all. She loved hockey and spent many years cheering on her favourite team, the Canucks.
Helmi and Fred had a special place in many people's hearts and together opened their home for many gatherings, which always included Helmi's amazing cooking. Their acceptance of all people made for exciting and lively conversation and always a welcoming and loving home. We admire our mother for her incredulous strength and courage and her tender soul.
She is predeceased by her husband, Fred, and daughter, Kristy. She is survived by her children; Karen (Byron), Audrey (Fred), Peter (Linda), Jennifer (Aaron), 8 grandchildren; Andrew (Taylor), Ben, Mack, Holly, Kelsey (Rick), Anneka, Alexei, Haley, as well as 4 great-grandchildren as well as our local beloved Dutch Clan and many relatives from Holland.
We will miss you terribly Mom.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Al Grywacheksi of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services has been entrusted with arrangements.
