Herman was born in Steenderen, Holland where he stayed until he immigrated to Canada in 1949.
He worked on a farm in Saskatchewan for a time until he heard of work in a sawmill in British Columbia. He worked his way up the ladder until he reached the position of a Supervisor at the local sawmill.
Herman liked to ski, hike and play tennis. He was very involved in the Church and volunteered for many duties over the years. He will be remembered as a very good neighbour helping many of them by pruning fruit trees, hedges and shoveling numerous driveways.
He is survived by his five children Joyce (Bob Maloff), Lillian, Terry (Glen Phillips), Roland (Deanna) and Emily (Ralph Carroll), 8 grandsons and 9 great-grandchildren, his wife of 65 years Tilly having predeceased him in August, 2017.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 10:30 am at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Castlegar with Father Rafael Benosa, Celebrant.
