It is with great sorrow that the family of Manuel Costa Melo of Castlegar, BC announce the peaceful passing of their beloved father, father in-law, Vavo, and brother, at Columbia View Lodge in Trail, BC on Wednesday June 22, 2022 at the age of 84 years old.
Manuel was born in February 1938, in Sao Miguel, Faial Da Terra, Azores to parents Jose and Hortencia Melo. He was proud to be the eldest brother to Mario and Jose Melo. After immigrating to Canada in 1971, Manuel married the love of his life Rosa Freitas in 1973 in Toronto. The couple moved onto Castlegar to begin their life together. They were then blessed with a beautiful baby boy.
Manuel worked at the local saw-mill until retiring in 1998 after 25 years. He returned to his homeland several times with his family over the years. Manuel was a talented Gardner. He enjoyed taking care of his pear trees for canning and grape vines for wine.
Manuel will be deeply missed and always lovingly remembered by his family and all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his wife Maria Rosa in September of 2002.
Left to mourn his passing is his one and only son Paul and his wife Amy, daughters Chelsea (Parker) and Zoe (Brett). His brother Mario and family from Bermuda and brother Jose and family from Toronto, as well as many in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services were held June 30, 2022 at St. Rita's Catholic Church.
