February 27, 1933 - July 9, 2023

In loving memory ~

The family of Mary Markin wishes to announce her peaceful passing at Talarico Place Care Centre, on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at the age of 90. Mary will always be remembered for her love and commitment to her family and friends, and she was also a dedicated Doukhobor psalmist.

Mary was born in Glade on February 27, 1933, to parents William and Ann (Popoff) Voykin.

In 1953, Mary married Fred Barisoff of Krestova. They were blessed with 3 children, Lauresa, Fred, & Marcie. In 1965, they built their home in Slocan Park. In 1967, a devastating tragedy struck the young family. Mary's husband Fred was killed in a logging accident.

In December of 1968, Mary met Peter Markin of Krestova. Peter had 2 daughters from a previous marriage, Sally and Martha, who lived in the Castlegar area with parents Martha (Sbitney) and Jerry Corbet. In July of 1971, their daughter Christina was born. The family moved to Krestova in 1976.

While growing up and throughout her adulthood, Mary learned and memorized numerous, complex psalms, and songs. She and her husband cherished singing with all the psalmist groups throughout the Kootenays, as well as gardening and camping. They also created wonderful family memories as they travelled to all the children and grandchildren with care packages, and hosted Christmas get-togethers with much joy, singing, and laughter.

Among numerous tragedies in her life, the hardest a mother could bare, was the devastating loss of her son Fred, who died at 33. Mary also overcame cancer.

Mary and Peter then lived awhile in South Slocan, then at Castlewood in Castlegar. In this past year, Mary's mobility and health declined further.

We would sincerely like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone at Castlewood, Castlegar Medical Clinic, Castlegar Home Support, Trail Regional Hospital, Nakusp Arrow Lakes Hospital, New Denver Pavilion Care Home, Interior Health, and Talarico Place for all of their support and care for our mother.

Mary was predeceased by parents William and Ann Voykin; stepmother Dora Parkin; first husband Fred in 1967; son-in-law George Plotnikoff in 1987; son Fred Barisoff in 1989; sister Doris Planiden in 1992; and son-in-law Darryl Plotnikoff in 2018.

Mary is survived by her husband Peter Markin of Castlegar; sister Lorna Sofonoff of Castlegar; daughter Sally DeRosa (husband Howie MacMillan) of Kinnaird; daughter Martha Jack (husband Terry) of Pass Creek; daughter Lauresa Plotnikoff of South Slocan/Ootischenia; daughter Marcie Plotnikoff of Creston; and daughter Christina Barisoff (husband Ken) of Nakusp; grandchildren Jeff DeRosa, Ryan Jack, Cody Jack (wife Angela), Jennifer Plotnikoff, Alex Plotnikoff (wife Marissa), Chris Plotnikoff (wife Emily), Katia and Anna Plotnikoff, Tim & Ainsley Barisoff; great-grandchildren Mya and Macy Plotnikoff, Gage and Hunter Jack, Max & Turner Plotnikoff; and numerous nieces and nephews.

On Saturday, July 15th, 2023 a traditional Doukhobor funeral was held for Mary at the Krestova Prayer Hall with burial at the Krestova Cemetery, followed by a traditional luncheon at the hall.

The family of Mary Markin would like to thank Grand Forks Funeral Services, Harry Zeabin of Krestova for officiating the funeral, the cooks Dorothy Dergousoff and Lorraine Salikin, and everyone for their comforting words and prayers.
