Community, child welfare, and education were all very important to Mickey. He spent 31 years serving as trustee on the local school board. Mickey was a strong supporter of language immersion programs, in particular, the Russian program. In recognition of his many years of service he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal in 2012.
Mickey was predeceased by his father William in 1970, his mother Alice in 1995, and his brother Harry in 2009. Mickey is survived by his wife Adriana, daughters Varenka (Michael), Natalia (Dave), sons Darren (Michael-Ann), Yuri (Carla), Max (Emily), siblings Bill (Virginia) and Nettie (George), many nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
